TV News: Serious Business or Low Cost Reality TV





And now, news channels are booming with sky being the limit. That day is not far away, when we will get a satellite news channel for every major city in India. Now news is not restricted to political happenings. Anything, which is strange or disgusting, is news. There are no rigid rules, which define news.

In the last one or two years, it seems Hindi news channels took a cue from the Hindi film fraternity. Whatever was hit in the news space was seen as a formula and followed thereafter.

First came a wave of family drama, matrimonial discord, violence and divorce. Once that reached its fatigue, and the audience got bored the news content searched for a different formula.

Then came ghost stories. News channels vied with each other in showing horror stories. While this content was very short lived, it was also alleged that some of the news reports were concocted.

This is the real face of Media today. There was a report in a TV channel about a car run without driver. I had commeneted- If a news channel can run by a head-less editor, why cant a car run without a driver?

The need to ensure that lable "news channel" is not misused is very clear. We have seen a rush of so called "news channels" degrade this label and must make sure this is stopped. It is not in the ken of Press Council but leaving things as they are is only inviting trouble.
